Held every two years in conjunction with
Green County Cheese Days,
the Monroe Swiss Singers' Heart of Cheese Days Exhibit is the "crown jewel" of the huge
weekend event.
Held in the Grand Hall of Turner Hall, 1217-17th Avenue, Monroe (two blocks south of the downtown Square), the exhibit features various Swiss folk arts and traditions as demonstrated by artisans right from within our own group!
Included are demonstrations and exhibits of Swiss cabinetry and woodworking, chip-carving, Bauernmalerei (Swiss folk painting), ethnic foods and Bräzelis (cookie made on a special iron), Scherenschnitte (paper cutting), and much, much more!
The very first Monroe Swiss Singers
folk arts exhibit was held in conjunction
with our spring concert at the Monroe Arts Center in 1994. It was such
a huge success that we moved the event to coincide with the biennial
Green County Cheese Days. Turner Hall, the headquarters of the
Monroe Swiss Singers, offered much more space and exposure for the
event.
Even without the Heart of Cheese Days Exhibit, the historic Turner Hall, built in 1938 as
an Emmenthal-style chalet, is full of Old World ambiance and
examples of Swiss folk art and
culture. Visitors to the downstairs Ratskeller will see cow
bells hanging over the bar, an abundance of folk paintings by the
late Carl Marty, and memorabilia of the Monroe Swiss Singers, the
Swiss-American Gymnastics Club (Turners) and others.
Admission to the Monroe Swiss Singers Heart of Cheese Days Exhibit is $2, $1 with a Cheese Days button . Due to the museum quality of many of the exhibits, children need to be accompanied by a parent. According to visitors from past Cheese Days, the Heart of Cheese Days Exhibit is the best bargain around and reflects the true origin of Cheese Days!
